    What is pride cup?

Pride Cup is the Royals’ annual mixed hockey tournament! This year is a particularly important year for Pride Cup, as we want to showcase our sport’s inclusivity in the face of changing England Hockey regulations affecting our trans and nonbinary players. We believe hockey is for everyone, and this tournament celebrates that!

    How can we enter?

There are two ways your club can get involved with Pride Cup this year:

Send a team/teams! Register a full team in the competition, decide on your fancy dress theme, and come and represent your club. Every player will need to pay the entry fee to your organizer, who will then send it on to the Royals.

Send an ambassador/ambassadors! We want to have as many teams represented as possible to showcase the strong allyship within the hockey community. If sending a full team isn’t possible we would love to have even one or two players from your club join us. Individual players can register for the tournament, and will either be assigned to the ambassadors’ team (numbers dependent) or to a Royals team to play alongside us. Individual players will pay the fee to their captain, once their team is assigned.

The deadline to register is 31 May 2025.

    How does it work?

    • This is a 7-aside mixed tournament
    • Matches will each be 20 minutes, one way
    • 7 players on the pitch at once: goalkeepers can be any gender; no more than 3 outfield players of any gender on the pitch at once (e.g. 3 men, 2 women, and 1 nonbinary player outfield is okay)
    • Teams leaving the pitch must each leave behind 1 player to umpire the next game
    • Open to players of all abilities, including development team members
    • Teams are invited to take part in fancy dress (e.g. Royals teams choose based on assigned colours of the rainbow) and the best dressed team will win a prize!
    • This is a friendly tournament, so be respectful and have fun!
    • Food and drink will be available onsite – the venue won’t allow alcoholic drinks to bebrought in from outside

    What are the rules?

    • The ball must stay below knee height except for shots on goal
    • No aerials
    • Goals cannot be scored by a reverse hit
    • No tomahawks/reverse hitting – BUT the ball can be pushed or reverse sweep passed
    • On short corners, the defending team not in the goal must be in the opposition’s D
    • First strike for short corner should be a non-male player (we use this term to include our nonbinary players)
    • Gender balance is based on an honour system (no questioning the gender of opposition players please!)
    • Remember to play safe and be nice to your umpires!

  • London Royals Hockey Club’s Response to England Hockey’s Trans and Non-binary Participation Policy

We the London Royals Hockey Club are deeply concerned by England Hockey’s 2025 Trans and Non-binary Participation policy. We strongly feel that this policy is exclusionary and divisive.

As the UK’s only LGBTQ+ Hockey Club, England Hockey approached us as part of the policy review and we made our stance incredibly clear: trans and non-binary players should be able to play for the team with which they identify, or where they feel most comfortable. Our feedback and the feedback of trans and non-binary hockey players and LGBTQ+ organisations has clearly been disregarded in the creation of this policy.

By splitting the sport into a Female category (only for people assigned female at birth, who are not taking, or have ever taken, testosterone) and an Open category, England Hockey are sending the strong message that trans women are not women, and they do not belong in the sport. The reality is that the Open team will almost entirely be made up of men, and therefore any trans woman wishing to play hockey would need to out herself in order to play.

The policy and the proposed implementation is abhorrent, illogical and promotes a culture of policing who is and isn’t a woman, exacerbating an already toxic environment for trans people to simply exist in. The negative impact this policy will have on the mental health of trans and non-binary hockey players far outweighs any perceived competitive advantage England Hockey believes trans women have in the sport.

This policy goes against what we The London Royals believe our sport is about – we believe everyone should be able to play and enjoy the sport we love. England Hockey, we implore you to withdraw this new policy.

We call on our supporters, club members and hockey family to take action to support the trans and non-binary community by amplifying our message, and letting England Hockey know your views on their new policy by emailing trans.policy@englandhockey.co.uk.

Based in central London.

Training every week.
