Women's 1s

The Women’s 1s play in London Women’s Division 3 North, with home matches on Saturday mornings at Redbridge Sports Centre in Barkingside.

They are the higher of London Royals’ two women’s league sides, and the most competitive women’s hockey at the club. The way in is the same as for every other Royals side: there are no trials. You come to a Tuesday or Thursday session at the George Orwell pitch in Wapping, play, and the captains work out where you fit.

London Royals is the UK’s biggest LGBTQ+ hockey club, and the 1s are a serious league side within it rather than an exception to it.

Training and venue

London Royals train every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the George Orwell pitch in Wapping, east London — 20 Tench St, London E1W 2QD, about five minutes' walk from Wapping station.

Tuesday 7.00–8.30pm
Thursday 7.00–8.30pm and 8.30–10.00pm

Each team trains once a week, and the slots rotate through the term, so check the current training rota for this week. If you're coming for the first time, the Men's 3s and 4s and the Women's 2s are the sides that take new players — come along to whichever of those is training that week, and we'll look after you.

How to join

You don't need to wait for the start of a season. Come to a Tuesday or Thursday session, play, and the captains will point you to the side that fits. The club's welcome day is usually the first week in September, but people join all year.

Membership covers the cost of your weekly league training sessions, our England Hockey membership, club insurance and other overheads such as equipment. We have four tiers of subs:
£125 reduced rate — students, people not in work, and goalkeepers
£200 new members, first season only
£240 standard rate, second season onwards
£275 standard rate plus a donation to the club's assistance fund

Membership is paid by bank transfer to the club. Match fees are £14 a game, paid through Pitchero, and cover the pitch hire, the referees and match tea.

Bring a stick, shin pads and a gum shield if you have them. There are always spare sticks to share if you don't.

Common questions

What standard does this team play at?

The Women's 1s play in London Women's Division 3 North, the higher of London Royals' two women's league sides and the most competitive women's hockey at the club. There are no trials — you come to training, play, and the captains work out where you fit.

Do I need experience to play for London Royals?

No. The club takes complete beginners as well as players returning after years away, and there are no trials — you come to training, play, and the captains find you a side.

Do I have to be LGBTQ+ to play for London Royals?

No. Part of being an inclusive club means that we welcome everyone from every background with zero judgment.

Will I actually get a game?

Each week, the captains select their team based on commitment to training, willingness to learn & improve, and availability. You are not expected to be at every training session and match, but those who put in the effort do see more pitch time. Captains also take into account rotating through the team to ensure players get to experience matches.
