2025 Theme: Hockey is for everyone!
What is pride cup?
Pride Cup is the Royals’ annual mixed hockey tournament! This year is a particularly important year for Pride Cup, as we want to showcase our sport’s inclusivity in the face of changing England Hockey regulations affecting our trans and nonbinary players. We believe hockey is for everyone, and this tournament celebrates that!
How can we enter?
There are two ways your club can get involved with Pride Cup this year:
Send a team/teams! Register a full team in the competition, decide on your fancy dress theme, and come and represent your club. Every player will need to pay the entry fee to your organizer, who will then send it on to the Royals.
Send an ambassador/ambassadors! We want to have as many teams represented as possible to showcase the strong allyship within the hockey community. If sending a full team isn’t possible we would love to have even one or two players from your club join us. Individual players can register for the tournament, and will either be assigned to the ambassadors’ team (numbers dependent) or to a Royals team to play alongside us. Individual players will pay the fee to their captain, once their team is assigned.
The deadline to register is 31 May 2025.
How does it work?
- This is a 7-aside mixed tournament
- Matches will each be 20 minutes, one way
- 7 players on the pitch at once: goalkeepers can be any gender; no more than 3 outfield players of any gender on the pitch at once (e.g. 3 men, 2 women, and 1 nonbinary player outfield is okay)
- Teams leaving the pitch must each leave behind 1 player to umpire the next game
- Open to players of all abilities, including development team members
- Teams are invited to take part in fancy dress (e.g. Royals teams choose based on assigned colours of the rainbow) and the best dressed team will win a prize!
- This is a friendly tournament, so be respectful and have fun!
- Food and drink will be available onsite – the venue won’t allow alcoholic drinks to bebrought in from outside
What are the rules?
- The ball must stay below knee height except for shots on goal
- No aerials
- Goals cannot be scored by a reverse hit
- No tomahawks/reverse hitting – BUT the ball can be pushed or reverse sweep passed
- On short corners, the defending team not in the goal must be in the opposition’s D
- First strike for short corner should be a non-male player (we use this term to include our nonbinary players)
- Gender balance is based on an honour system (no questioning the gender of opposition players please!)
- Remember to play safe and be nice to your umpires!
